Mercie Pennington Obituary

Mercie Mae Withers Pennington was the ninth of eleven children born to the late William Henderson Withers and Martha Poe Withers in Woodson, Arkansas. She was born on March 8, 1932, and transitioned from this life to a place where she can rest on January 14, 2024. All of her siblings preceded her in death; Erma Lee Withers, Novella Clark, Hildry Williams, Rosie Warren, Martha West, Dorcus Pugh, William, Theodore, Jewel and Johny Withers.

She professed a hope in Christ and became a member of Woodson Temple Church of God in Christ under the pastorate of her father, Elder W.H. Withers. Many years later she united with First Baptist Church at Woodson under the leadership of Rev. D.C. McMurray.

On August 20, 1950, she was united in matrimony to Rev. Odell Pennington who preceded her in death. Seven children were born to that union. Three sons preceded her in death: James Odell “Buggy”, Bruce T, and Malcolm Lynn Pennington.

Mercie was a skilled seamstress and an avid fisherman. She loved to laugh and entertain. Through her love for cooking, she brought joy to many with her specialty dessert- teacakes. She passed her love of music on to her children and grandchildren, who were also witness to her piano and guitar playing ability. One of her most treasured accomplishments was when she returned to school at the age of 63 and earned her high school diploma.

She leaves to cherish her memory four children, Jacqueline Yvonne Pennington of Wrightsville, Beverly Yvette Perry (Derrick), Eric Maurice Pennington, and Iris Rose Pennington, all of Woodson; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, six great great-grandchildren and countless other relatives and friends.
